Wash The Dishes

Today, we all had a special Plank Pose Bookclub meeting, because I got to tell you all about the first book I finished this year!

Anything by Thich Nhat Hanh deserves a read.  Let’s just get that out of the way right now.

I found this book at just the right time in my life.  I have felt like something was missing from my meditation practice.  I used to be mindful more often than not, and I have found that I am not as of late.

This book is about how simple mindfulness is to practice even if you have all of the dishes in the world to wash or enough children to have your own band.

The most important quote in this book for me was:

Wash the dishes to wash this dishes.

This quote is the basis of all of the exercises and practices in the book.

It is important that when we wash the dishes we are not doing for any reason other than washing the dishes.  The coffee that we will have when the dishes are clean or the Breaking Bad marathon that you promised yourself upon completion of the task is not the reason you are doing the dishes.  You are doing the dishes to do the dishes.  Nothing else.

When I heard the “wash the dishes” quote, it suddenly all came together for me.  I have been missing mindfulness.

Since finishing this book, I have implemented a better meditation practice for myself of guided and silent meditations. I have been washing the dishes to wash the dishes, and I feel the difference in everything.

Let me know if you have read this book or if you are reading it.  I would love to know your thoughts.

I also welcome book recommendations, so bring those on as well!
